Three-Decade Revenge Plot Ends in Brutal Killing of Alleged Informant in Mumbai; Crime Branch Arrests Two from Nagpur

Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested two suspects from Nagpur in a shocking revenge killing linked to a 1999 police encounter. The accused allegedly murdered a 78-year-old former informant in Nagpada, inflicting over 20 wounds. The case involves underworld connections, historical gang rivalries, and a decades-old cycle of retaliation tied to gangster Shadik Kalia.

Mumbai has been shaken by a chilling case in which a decades-old encounter-related revenge allegedly culminated in the brutal murder of a former police informant. Acting swiftly, the Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested the main accused and his accomplice from Nagpur in connection with the killing.

According to police officials, Shadik Javar, the nephew of gangster Shadik Kalia—who was killed in an encounter in 1999—allegedly orchestrated the murder of 78-year-old Iqbal Ibrahim Selia. Selia was believed to have been an informant who had provided critical intelligence to the team of encounter specialist Daya Nayak at the time of the 1999 operation.

The fatal attack took place on the evening of April 20 at Selia’s residence in Nagpada, Mumbai, when other family members were reportedly away. Two assailants entered the house and attacked Selia with sharp weapons, inflicting more than 20 blows in a violent assault that left him dead on the spot. The victim’s wife and son discovered his blood-soaked body upon returning home.

Following the murder, the attackers fled the scene. CCTV footage captured their movements, enabling investigators to trace their escape route. Police stated that the suspects moved through Antop Hill and Vidyavihar, reached Kalyan, and eventually escaped to Nagpur.

Investigations have also revealed the background of Shadik Kalia, who was active in the 1990s in the Kalachowki area, where he initially sold footwear on pavements. He later became associated with the underworld and was linked to the Chhota Shakeel gang. In November 1999, during an alleged plot to assassinate a prominent leader, Daya Nayak’s team surrounded and eliminated him in an encounter. At the time of Kalia’s death, Shadik Javar was only two years old.
